Unexpected and unprecedented rain struck over the weekend — with Hurricane Joaquin-increased intensity of storms dropping as much as 20 inches of water in some areas — many of the dams were strained beyond capacity.

  • Seventeen people were killed as a result of weather-related incidents in South Carolina since Thursday, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety said Wednesday afternoon.

Historic rains have flooded large swaths of South Carolina, tearing apart roadways, trapping residents and ruining water supplies. At least nine weather-related deaths are linked to the storms. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley gave this numerical assessment of the emergency:

40,000 People without water     26,000  Households without power

2,700 Calls for emergency help

1,300 National Guard troops deployed throughout the state

932 People seeking refuge in 25 shelters.

910 Traffic collisions 550 Roads closed

150 Water rescues 127 Bridges closed  25 Aerial rescues 25 Shelters open
