worse all over the US and perhaps the whole earth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unexpected and unprecedented rain struck over the weekend \u2014 with Hurricane Joaquin-increased intensity of storms dropping as much as 20 inches of water in some areas \u2014 many of the dams were strained beyond capacity.<\/p>\n<p>More than two feet of rain <em><strong>has<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0fallen in central Charleston County which is situated between the Ashley and Cooper\u00a0<em><strong>rivers<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The unofficial state record for 5-day total rainfall, which had stood for 107 years, has been surpassed at more than a dozen reporting sites.<\/p>\n<p>The rainfall exceeded that of any tropical cyclone in South Carolina history<\/p>\n<p>Six sites with more than 50 years of data have had their wettest Octobers on record weekend of\u00a0<em><strong>October 3, 2015<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The October monthly precipitation record for any location in the state has likely been broken.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the hardest hit areas recorded rainfall amounts higher than 20 inches. Major roadways were closed across the state and Gov. Nikki Haley encouraged people to stay home and avoid any unnecessary travel.<\/li>\n<li>Seventeen people were killed as a result of weather-related incidents in South Carolina since Thursday, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety said Wednesday afternoon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rockbridge Road in the Columbia, S.C., area was damaged by floodwaters on Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cary Lake Dam in the Columbia, S.C., area washed out on Sunday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Historic rains have flooded\u00a0large swaths of South Carolina, tearing apart roadways, trapping residents and ruining water supplies. At least nine weather-related deaths are linked to the storms. South Carolina Gov.
